Analog to Digital: My Design Journey

Analog to Digital: Hal’s Design Journey

Walkers and a runner enjoy a beautiful day on a prairie-scaped jogging trail, setting the foreground for the main subject. In the center of the image, a large outdoor installation of soil holds root-like shapes that seem to glimmer with gold in the afternoon sun. At the surface of the soil, these roots meet the row of plants to which they are attached. The plants, all various species of prairie grasses, flutter as a breeze blows through the sky. The slope of soil casts a long shadow, guiding the story’s journey to the background, where the trail fades out to a wooded park in the distance. In every form,

I adore design. I have had the opportunity to create everything from craft cocktails for James Beard Award-winning chefs, to engineering and building high-end flat-packable furniture with hand-milled hardware, to (more recently) designing apps and websites.

As my design work continues to lean heavier on the side of tech, I am discovering more ways to solve human-related problems through UX/UI Design, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning.

I envision my next role to involve storytelling, advocating, collaborating, and problem-solving. I plan on continuing to hone my skills forever, following the iterative process of design itself.

My partner recently read a book which prompts the reader: ‘What do you hope to be remembered for?’ We discussed the subject over dinner one night, each milling the question over between bites and sips of pasta bolognese and Cherry Coke Zero. It was such an intense, yet simple question. But I guess my answer was, too.

I hope I am remembered for helping people, and for contributing something beautiful through the world of design.
