Luxury home automation company now offers clients a high-end, flat-packable solution worthy of showcasing prized audio systems

Unlimited Integration is a Houston-based business that specializes in smart home automation. Founded by two audiophiles, the company also operates as a licensed McIntosh Systems dealer. The VP reached out to me with a challenge:

Design and fabricate market-ready audio media storage.

The storage needed to be sturdyenough to support up to 100 lbs of weight per shelf, but also be flat-packable with easy assembly by user. The aesthetic, design, and material quality also needed to reflect that of the McIntosh Labs brand. After multiple interviews, I found some trending pain points amongst users. McIntosh owners don’t have many furniture options that safely and beautifully showcase their audio system, turn tables, and records. Most shelves eventually sag or the entire unit sways from the weight of McIntosh equipment. Storage that is sturdy enough lacks the ability to be easily transported, tackle tight turns, or clear low staircase pitches. A custom built-in can’t move with the equipment to a new location. Users are having trouble finding solutions that show off their McIntosh set ups when in use, as well as neatly conceal the system when not in use.

Marcus, the 42 year old hi-fi audiophile and VP of the high-end tech integration company, ended up inspiring the user persona for the project. Marcus constantly juggles meetings while still making time for family and self care. His favorite way to relax is to play curated Spotify lists on his perfectly dialed in McIntosh set up. When entertaining, he prefers to spin vinyl records from his collection and show off all the capabilities of his McIntosh system. Has worked hard for his business and his lifestyle, and seeks the highest quality when it comes to products for both.

The solution evolved over multiple iterative stages. The walnut casework is designed with McIntosh dimensions and style in mind. Shelving modularity allows for the user to set up their McIntosh system exactly as they wish while optimizing vertical record storage. Meticulously machined custom hardware makes assembly and disassembly a breeze, while allowing for the entire unit to be flat-packable and support a sustainable future. Beveled millwork joins beautifully, encasing front sliding panels to reveal and conceal the console’s contents while allowing unobstructed Bluetooth and infrared remote signal reach, even when panels are completely closed.
