I was commissioned to design and build unique signage for an award-winning abstract artist.

The parameters were simple: Bring her famous tag line to life in a way that represents her style and brand. Having built custom canvases for this artist, I had the advantage of understanding the unique textures she likes to work with. I thought, ‘what better way to convey her message than through signage that literally showcases her art?’ I designed the typeface and layout the same way I model furniture and fixtures in Rhino. I then built the sign using rigid, lightweight foam and a gesso-plaster mixture so that each letter can be pulled out like a book from a shelf. The opening night of her new exhibit, the signage remained in its unpainted white plaster state, with the anticipation growing amongst the artist’s collectors to see the final painted piece later in the season. The sign, painted by artist Katharine Ligon, is now a permanent anchor in her studio and is a nod to the late David Adickes, an American modernist sculptor and painter, and a dear friend and mentor to Katharine.
